QSS SUPPORTS MARLOW

marAs part of our Quinte Fights Cancer Month, students decided to support a child in our community who is battling a rare form of cancer.  We donated $2,000 to Marlow.  Marlow is a bright 5 yr old girl that was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma in December 2011.  At diagnosis, a significant tumour had already developed in her lower right leg and spread to her lymph nodes.  Marlow began treatment just before Christmas 2011 and has been fighting ever since.  Marlow's original chemotherapy protocol consisted of 53 weeks of treatment.  This took approximately 15 months to complete at Kingston Regional Cancer Centre.  The family also moved to Ottawa for 28 treatments of radiation, each one required her to be under general anaesthetic. This occured over 6 weeks at CHEO. Marlow had a part surgically implanted in her chest wherein she recieves her chemotherapy, medications, transufsions, blood work and fluids.  she has had numerous CT scans, MRI's, bone marrow aspirates and other procedures.  The side effects of the type of chemotherapy/radiation she has been given are horrible, many of which are still to come.  This includes 3 treatments that can give her leukemia.  The majority of treatment, while trying to attack the cancer cells, attacks good cells as well.  This has caused her immune system to be significantly compromised, causing many nights in the Emergency room and many more nights being admitted on antibiotics praying she did not pick up a bug that she could not fight off. In March of 2013 we were told that her post treatment scans showed she had responded well, there was no sign of active cancer and were were given the "ok" to go on her Childrens Wish trip.  We were advised to go sooner rather than later due to the aggressive nature of her cancer.  Marlow returned to daycare and her hair started to return.  Sadly, her first 3 month scan done at the beginning of June 2013 showed 3 tumors behind her right knee just above the field of radiation as well as a small tumour in her lymph node. Marlow's care moved to Sick Kids in June 2013 and since then she travels there each week to recieve chemotherapy and other treatments.

GIRLS RUGBY CAPTURE ANTIQUE BRONZE AT OFSAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

OFSAA RUGBY  Rugby Saints had an excellent tournament with some really tough games.  In the first game vs Regi of Kingston the SAINTs dominated with a final score of 39-0.  In the second match vs #2 Seed St. Peter's of Ottawa, the SAINTs once again dominated but had a tough time scoring finishing with an 8-3 final score. After a gruelling first game the SAINTS played again in the semi final at 1:00 against the # 3 seed Brantford Collegiate.  The SAINTS battled hard but lost 11-5 to a very strong BCI team which put them into the Bronze Medal Game.  After a big pancake breakfast the Team was ready for the Bronze Medal Game vs Uxbrige who had nearly defeated the #1 Seed Oakville Trafalgar in the semi finals. The team was defeated 29-15 but they left everything on the field!  Blood, sweat and tears.  Thanks so much to our coaches Mr. Hercus, Mr. Arbuckle, Ms. Robinson, and Mr. Owen.
